AZIZA MUSTAFA-ZADEH

Aziza Mustafa-zadeh has won the hearts of thousands of people of various ages, nationalities and religions. Living in a foreign country she is known not because she is a daughter of the famous jazz musician, the legendary Vagif Mustafa-zadeh, but as an "eastern beauty", a "princess of jazz", because she made it possible for real European music lovers to listen to her synthesis of eastern music and jazz. A unique synthesis and her virtuoso improvisation shook an educated and demanding public, which had never before heard such a fluid integration of European and Eastern music.

Aziza Mustafa-zadeh was born on 19th December 1969 in Baku. Something suddenly reminds me of Aziza`s first performance on the professional stage. In 1978, when she was a little girl, she went to Tbilisi, where a festival of jazz music from the countries of the Soviet Union was held. That evening little Aziza became recognized as one of the best of singers.

That first success in Aziza`s life was very important, an unforgettable event. However, it was no surprise for Vagif and Elza khanum who tenderly helped their favorite daughter at every step of the way. She was brought up in a family of musicians, where Azerbaijani national songs, mugham and jazz were played. Indeed, because her father was a leader of the vocal quartet "Sevil", she knew its whole repertoire by heart and she was able to create unusual compositions on the basis of any music she heard. She had already demonstrated unusual abilities in improvisation, and her ability to use her voice as an instrument impressed everybody who heard her singing.

Her years spent at the Bul-Bul special musical school were fruitful. The teachers admired Aziza’s devotion to study, her musical intuition and unusual memory: everything pointed to a bright future. She had already been taught at school to order her thoughts and feelings: otherwise they would have emerged as an uncontrollable flood, such was the potential which already existed inside this young girl.
In 1986 Aziza was awarded the gold medal at the International Jazz Festival, which took place in Tbilisi again. That prize was an notable beginning to her creative activity.

Aziza’s father taught her very much, he was her main teacher and remained her ideal and example forever. She continued his work and proved to everybody, but first of all to herself, that she had the right not only to exist in the world of music but to shine as the brightest star on the world stage.
Aziza was a winner of several festivals and competitions when she was a student of the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire and in 1987 she was a prizewinner at the vocal competition "Debut".

Even such a famous Azerbaijani musician as Rafig Babayev, with whom Aziza performed from 1987, can be mentioned among her teachers.
In 1990 Aziza worked as a soloist of the orchestra "Gaya" and played her own separate program.

Aziza is talented and tireless in her creativity and, besides her gift as a pianist she has proved herself as a composer too. As a performer of classical music and jazz she has found her own original style. One of Aziza’s peculiarities is her creative curiosity about anything new and different. Her tireless search and the ability to realize new and creative ideas shows her great love of music and the way she performs her own and other composers’ compositions demonstrates her essential attitude to life and art. Her love of music and the desire to convey this love to her audience encourages her to create continuously, not to be content with past achievement and to work to become a more mature musician.

Having been trained by good teachers and gained a solid understanding, Aziza was quite sure that the development of modern music in its various genres depends strongly on deep knowledge and use of classical music. We have every reason to be proud of Aziza’s unforgettable performance of mugham improvisations and the way she draws on national music in her creativity.
We accept Aziza as a gifted pianist, an educated vocalist, professional jazz singer and a talented composer. The plays, preludes and songs she writes personify her dreams and wishes.

At present Aziza lives in Europe, where she works on her projects, performs her solo concerts and records albums (she has already made seven). She works with such outstanding and world-famous musicians as John Patitucci, Dave Weckl, Bill Evans, Omar Hakim, Toots Thielemans and others.
When Aziza takes part in the various festivals and competitions abroad, she never forgets that she is the daughter of her land and introduces herself as a musician from Azerbaijan.

Her delicate looks belie a very purposeful spirit and she possesses huge inner strength, received as a heritage from her father. Because of her natural talent and admirable temperament, Aziza Mustafa-zadeh has achieved much on the world music stage. However, the energy and the ideas which fill her prove that she has not yet reached the limit of her skills and much greater achievements are waiting for her ahead.

Watching her tender hands playing the piano during a concert and her obedience to the influence and power of music we realize that the girl is worthy of continuing the work of her father.
